  Chapter One

“A hundred bucks says she safewords out in five minutes.”

Harrison chewed on an ice chip that had been swimming in his glass, observing the woman that his best friend was referring to. There was no way in hell he’d take that bet. Elena Conti had joined the club around eight months ago and rarely played twice with the same Dom. In all the times that he’d witnessed her in a scene, she’d either fake like she was enjoying it or safeword out when things became too intense. She was ruining her welcome and it was only a matter of time before she left the club.

“I wonder what is going on in that woman’s head?” Harrison asked, swirling around the ginger ale that was left in his tumbler. He watched as Lucas secured her wrists to the St. Andrew’s cross, curious as to why he even bothered. Lucas had to know Elena’s reputation by now, although maybe he was bored since his brother was out of town. “She’s running out of Doms willing to waste their time.”

Harrison glanced around the room, seeing whom else was here this evening. The Point was one of his favorite haunts, as the center area where he and Grant were seated contained several nooks allowing them access to view the room. He loved the smell of spices that were utilized in brewing the tea available to the submissives. The stimulating scent mingled with the aromatic pheromones in the air underneath the dim lighting, making for an intoxicating ambiance. Play stations had been set up along the mahogany-paneled walls and roped off with red velvet rope barriers in order to provide appropriate space while allowing viewers to observe without interfering with individual scenes.

Ryan and Isaac had taken the main play area and were attracting the most attention with their expertise in shibari. Harrison had indicated his interest a few weeks ago, with their promise of teaching him soon. The sub they were working on tonight seemed to be enjoying herself immensely. He noticed a few of the regulars, although quite a few members of the Order were missing from tonight’s activities.

“Lucas likes a challenge,” Grant replied, leaning back against the black leather couch.

“Lucas and Damien are the most senior duo of the Order, age wise that is. You’d think they’d read the mood of the membership and finally find a permanent sub.”

“I don’t think Damien will ever consider taking on another sub in a permanent relationship. Rumor has it that after Maggie died, Lucas was the only person who could help keep his sanity intact.”

“That was what, five years ago?” Harrison asked, holding up his now empty glass and signaling to the sub on bar duty that he’d like to order another one. Her tray was level with and secured to her nipples, supported by a chain around her neck. Placing his empty glass on her tray elicited a slight widening of her eyes. She quickly took his order and moved off toward the bar while balancing her burden. Her Master had given her the added pleasure of what appeared to be a rather large butt plug that made a pleasant pulsating noise. Turning back to the scene in front of him, Harrison saw Lucas take out his black suede flogger from his bag and flick his wrist, warming up his muscles. “I can only imagine how rough it was, but that’s a long time to be alone.”

“Let’s face it. Our lifestyle limits us when it comes to finding women. Not many women are willing to serve one Dominant male, let alone two Masters.”

Harrison noticed that Elena never took her gaze off of the implement in Lucas’s hand. Her brown eyes were a light shade of caramel, matching the highlights in her long, dark-brown hair. Her skin still held a slight Mediterranean sun-kissed hue, although he figured it had more to do with her heritage than it did with the s
un, considering it was mid-November. She was wearing a white corset, which seemed to be her preferred piece of clothing at the clubs, which exposed her ample breasts. She also wore matching opaque stockings that if she had been his sub, Elena never would have been permitted to wear. He liked skin, and since she had a smaller frame than he usually enjoyed on his submissives, Harrison would have made sure she could be seen. He was thinking maybe a loose fishnet stocking would do her justice.

“You mean like Elena? It’s obvious she has a hard time serving one Master, let alone two.” Harrison retrieved his refilled rocks glass from the serving sub’s tray. The perspiration on her breasts was evident. He struggled to remember her name, thinking maybe it was Marie. He murmured his thanks, dismissing her and then turning back to see Lucas start to warm up Elena’s skin. “She doesn’t even appear interested. I can’t believe you thought I would take your bet.”

Elena was a sensual woman and easier to read than she was probably aware of. The way her lips were compressed more firmly than usual was a dead giveaway that she was wary of Lucas’s ability. Her eyes would flitter back and forth from his face to the flogger. What was she looking for? He had to wonder why he was even interested in her reactions, considering she’d be the last sub he’d want to take under his wing.

“Mr. James. Mr. Delport.” Harrison hid his surprise at seeing Kennedy Van Camp at the club. She rarely ventured into their domain, keeping herself from becoming too involved with her clients. Did the woman ever wear anything other than classic business suits? “I’ll take the under on that bet, Grant. She’ll call it at three minutes.”

Harrison laughed at her audacity. Although not officially a member, Kennedy was allowed access to lifestyle clubs throughout the city due to her relationship with the Order. Truth be known, he didn’t know a whole lot about her or even how she came to be such an important contact with the men on the Board. She was an enigma, wrapped in a well-appointed gray worsted wool suit.

Kennedy was the owner of Safeword LLC, a company that specialized in the placement of submissive women. She had garnered herself quite the reputation with her high success rate, which was why he and Grant had chosen to utilize her services.

“What brings you into our realm, Kennedy?” Grant asked, although Harrison noticed he’d yet to take his gaze off of Elena. He wasn’t really considering her as a sub, was he? Grant knew that Harrison wasn’t the type of man who enjoyed playing with a submissive who topped from the bottom.

“You two,” Kennedy answered, finally momentarily bringing Grant’s attention around to the conversation. She really was a striking woman, with her lips a flawless shade of red. Her auburn hair was drawn back into a severe bun, while her porcelain skin accentuated her blue eyes, which were now focused on them. She was holding out a folder. Harrison shifted, placing his glass on the side table, and leaned over to take it from her. She’d occupied the chair to his right, giving her full access to Elena’s scene to which she wasn’t paying even the slightest bit of attention. Her concentration was solely on them, which caused a feeling of unease to settle in his bones. “You met with me in regards to finding what will hopefully lead to a permanent placement and I apologize it’s taken so long, but the woman I have in mind—let’s just say I had to utilize James to ensure everything was accurate on her application.”

“Why?” Harrison asked. He knew that James Calihan was Kennedy’s Chief Security Officer at Safeword LLC. She used him for background information, along with enforcing the contracts that she put forth. “If she’s not trustworthy, I’m surprised you would even take her application or recommend her to us. Who is she?”

There was soft music playing in the background, and although the occasional slap of leather and cries of pain and ecstasy echoed throughout the room, Harrison was aware of the fact that Elena had yet to express herself in any way. He glanced over, seeing that Lucas was working his magic on her with his favorite flogger, but it seemed to do nothing for her. The soft strands of the suede made contact with her shoulders, then her breasts, and finally worked down to where her thighs were. Elena still kept her eyes on Lucas’s face as though he were doing nothing more than giving her a massage.

Harrison mentally shrugged, thinking maybe Grant was rubbing off on him, but Elena was not their concern. He turned his attention back to the folder. This is what he’d been waiting on for months. Was she someone new to the lifestyle? He took a deep breath and then opened the manila folder to reveal whom Kennedy had chosen for them.

“Hell, no,” Harrison exclaimed after seeing the woman’s name on top of the form. Grant leaned forward in his seat and held out his hand. Harrison quickly closed it without reading any of the details and passed the information over to his best friend. Kennedy always prided herself on her success rate, but this time she got it wrong. “What would make you think that Elena Conti would even be compatible with us?”

“I’ve got to agree with Harrison on this one, Kennedy.” Grant seemed to be absorbed in whatever was placed in the folder, but Harrison had already decided he didn’t want to read it. “Although she intrigues me, this isn’t the right fit. I’m not saying that she doesn’t affect me on a physical level, but we’re talking about the potential to make a woman—our submissive woman—a permanent fixture of our lives. This is about our future.”

At that precise moment, Elena announced her safe word somewhat unceremoniously and Lucas stopped. It was obvious she said it due to the fact that neither she nor Lucas was getting enjoyment out of the scene. In fact, she seemed a bit bored. He closed the distance between him and Elena, softly speaking to her as he released her binds. Whatever was said, Harrison couldn’t hear, but it was clear the scene was done and there were no hard feelings.

Harrison leaned forward on the couch, resting his elbows on his knees so that he could make Kennedy see reason. She was just going to have to find them another applicant. “Look at her, Kennedy. Elena can’t seem to find enjoyment from a scene, and if she does, it’s evident that she’ll only allow herself to take so much before she safewords out. We’ve witnessed it countless times. If I hadn’t seen those scenes when she was about to reach subspace, I would swear she was just a vanilla girl trying out something different for laughs.”

“Harrison’s right. She’s scared of handing over control to a Dom, but yet can’t stop herself from trying.” Grant shifted through the papers that were on his lap. While Harrison was wearing a pair of jeans and a white buttoned-down shirt, Grant had thrown on his favorite pair of leathers and a black T-shirt. The material helped the folder stay in place. “And James couldn’t find anything to indicate the reason for her distrust?”

“Not yet, although he’s still working on it. For two men who claim not to be interested in her, you both seem to know an awful lot about her.”

“Kennedy,” Harrison said in warning, “don’t play games with us. I’m sorry to say, but you got it wrong this time. And I’m surprised that you’re still having James look into her past or that you would still want to place her among the Order.”

“I don’t play games, Harrison.” Kennedy didn’t blink an eye as she stared him down. He had to give her credit. She wasn’t a woman who backed down and she feared nothing. “Whatever Elena is hiding, if she’s hiding something, has nothing to do with her character. If I didn’t believe she was worthy of being placed, I wouldn’t do it. And don’t assume I only place submissives with the Order. There are other Dominants out there who utilize my services.”

“She’s not the one for us, Kennedy.”

“Her father’s Richard Collins? As in, Judge Collins?” Grant asked, holding out a paper for Harrison. He shook his head, refusing to be drawn into this conversation any more than he already was. “Harrison, look at the bottom paragraph.”

“It doesn’t matter what’s in there, Grant,” Harrison said, irritation setting in. He could not stress enough that he wasn’t interested. He turned so that he could see Elena. Lucas was talking to her and she was adamantly shak
ing her head at something he said. Her heart-shaped face tilted up in impudence and it was all Harrison could do not to go over there and take a crop to her ass. Damn it. She wasn’t his type. He watched as she walked away from Lucas, heading toward the foyer. “Elena’s got an attitude as well, and you know how I feel about a sub topping from the bottom.”

“Maybe if she had the right Doms, she wouldn’t feel it necessary to top from the bottom,” Kennedy replied in a superior tone.

“Kennedy, I swear it’s a good thing you’re not a sub, or I’d have you over my knee.”

“Since you know nothing of my personal life, I wouldn’t make assumptions if I were you.” Kennedy picked a piece of lint off of her gray skirt. “As I was saying, you came to me knowing that I have an…instinct…for placing subs. If you trusted me to go that far, trust me to follow through.”

“But Elena—” Harrison shook his head.

“Harrison, look at this.” Grant stood up and literally shoved the paper in his hands. Harrison had no choice but to take it. Things were getting out of control and that was one thing he couldn’t tolerate. “It lists the last club she was affiliated with.”

Harrison looked down at the paper in his hands. Sure enough, the Chamber was there in black and white. While the Order was compiled of a close-knit group of elite men within their circle, there were those men that would never be allowed access. Since the Order was involved in a few select clubs around the city and a few in other states, these men had no choice but to take their play elsewhere. Harrison personally knew some of these men and he felt bad for any submissive that thought they possessed any type of quality a true Dominant possessed.
